Moose season is almost underfoot, and everyone from newbies to veterans will seek to get a nice trophy this year. So, here are some simple tips to keep in mind as you go out moose hunting this season:
1 – For Bigger Trophies, Go North – For whatever reason, common wisdom says that you’ll have a better chance at a bigger trophy moose if you go north. As far as I can tell, statistics show this too. So, if you really want the big one, Saskatchewan really is the place to hunt!
2 – Take the Moose’s Sense into Account – Anyone who hunts knows that animals senses to danger are a little more heightened then our own. So, remember to grab some urine and cover up your human smell and make sure to tread softly as you hunt. But, use sound to your advantage, whether with calls or mimicking thrashing, you can attract a nice buck, so practice calls and thrashing before going out.
3 – Don’t Be too quick on your Trigger – Just because you see a big moose 50 yards away doesn’t mean it’s the trophy that your after. Assess the situation and be patient. An immature buck might have a big body and no rack, so don’t let body size fool you. Get a good look at the rack and decide at that point whether or not it’s the trophy you’re after. Patience is a virtue, especially when hunting!
